You can't magically restore data that was lost during compression. Is it worthwhile to re-rip those discs as lossless ALAC, or will that just produce a bunch of giant files with no increase in fidelity over whats already on my PC?Įdit: Just for clarification, I understand that converting from an MP3 to ALAC will not improve the quality of the file on a computer. (Assuming the MP3s are 256 kbs, and you're ripping as 256 kbs) Will ripping that disc as an MP3 further degrade the quality of the music, or will the computer simply recognize it as being an MP3 and leave it as is? Mind you, the CD's themselves sound rather good. However, a couple of my CD's were burned for me by friends, and I'm sure they're just your garden variety 128/256 kbs MP3s. Now I've been going back and re-ripping all of my CD's as lossless ALAC files. Prior to the harddrive upgrade, I had ripped most of my music as AAC files, leaving only the really good recordings as ALAC to conserve space. So I just completed a 500GB SSD harddrive swap in my 10 year old iPod Video.
